 EATONTOWN,
NJ, January 21, 2010 – The CERDEC C4ISR Automatic Virtual Environment
(CAVE) lab, managed by JBM, hosted 6th and 8th grade students from Holy
Family School. Since 2007, the CAVE lab has supported several CERDEC
Educational Outreach Program tours by local community organizations.
Previous community tours of the CAVE lab have been conducted for Neptune
High School, Monmouth Junior Science Symposium, and Red Bank Regional
School, just to name a few.
JBM lab manager Kevin Gordon guided students as they
got the opportunity to experience some of the experimental, virtual
environments that are being considered to support Army operations in the
future.
The purpose of these tours is to “engage today’s students in the hopes
of creating tomorrow’s engineers and scientists.” School tours of the
CAVE lab and other CERDEC R&D labs provide students with the opportunity
to observe and interact with state of the art technologies developed and
applied specifically for the military environment. Hands-on
technologies made available to the students include Microsoft
multi-touch surface table, Immersive 3-D stereo visualization, and
Google Earth applied to Command and Control applications.
Since opening its doors in June 2005, the CAVE lab has been a key
facility for demonstrating CERDEC C2D R&D technologies. These
technologies include Machine Foreign Language Translation, Coalition
Chat Line Plus, Biometrics, and speech recognition. Other communities
that the CAVE lab hosts regularly include foreign military VIP tours and
Intern Orientation Program tours. Additionally the CAVE lab has been
used as the “set” for various internal organizational videos and has
even been filmed for the History Channel’s Tactical to Practical
television series.
